Argentina Title: De la naturaleza y especificidad del sistema ferroviario argentino: el desafío de la confiabilidad Abstract: In spite of being conceived as a simple and tightly coupled system, the railway transport is involved in accidents and catastrophes. It is a theoretical and technically reliable system that doesn’t stop contributing with empirical evidence about its vulnerabilities. The discrepancy between theoretical and empirical railway transport performance, brings the discussion about the nature of the system. This article points to shape the ontology of the railway system using the scheme of Normal Accidents Theory (NAT), adding organizational dimensions not considered by CH Perrow.Once ontological and epistemological issues are overcome, determining factors for the development of the Argentinean railway system are analyzed, additionally the public-private railway system dilemma is approached and finally recommendations for the management are proposed. Accordingly, this analysis allows to single out the difference between ontological and contingent vulnerabilities and in addition, the potential of the Argentinean railway system to develop reliability.
